A Proud Member of Boxing Ontario, West End AC Among First Boxing Clubs in Toronto to Reopen Post-COVID 19 Closures

On January 15th, 2018, West End Athletic Club opened its doors to the public for the very first time. Precisely two years later to the day, following three months of shut down due to the spread of COVID-19, West End Athletic Club became one of the first gyms in Toronto to welcome back its members and resume its mission to help everyone find a healthier life through boxing. The decision to reopen came to the relief of loyal West End AC community members like Lynda S. who returned immediately upon reopening and haven’t missed a day since.

A Proud Member of Boxing Ontario

In May, as Ontario took steps to ease lockdown restrictions and get people moving, the provincial government in conjunction with Boxing Ontario’s KO COVID Taskforce allowed members of Sport Canada to resume training. This extended to clubs like West End Athletic and other sanctioned members of Boxing Ontario, the provincial body responsible for the promotion of Olympic-Style Boxing across Ontario. Boxing Ontario, like its cohorts across the country, is a recognized affiliate of Boxing Canada, also known as the Canadian Amateur Boxing Association (CABA).

The Foundations of Boxing in Canada

Boxing Canada, or CABA, was founded in 1969, nearly 70 years after amateur boxing first made an appearance in Canada. The national association was created in an effort to enforce a uniform set of rules and work to develop officials to national and international standards. These distinctions helped separate amateur boxing from those competing professionally and enabled Canada to become an active player on the international stage. Today, Boxing Canada continues to support youth, elite and Olympic boxers in their pursuit of excellence, inside and outside the ring.

Together, Boxing Canada and Boxing Ontario work with members across the province of Ontario who are actively engaged as club founders, members and fans. Founded in 1972, Boxing Ontario is now comprised of over 90 clubs, 900 competitors and 12,000+ recreational members, including those who make up the community here at West End AC.
