You can be disciplined, focused, and giving it 110% when it comes to your workout routine. But if you’re missing the motivation to keep at it – what’s the point?

While there’s no denying that sticking to an exercise routine is no easy task, during a time like COVID-19 when so many people are suffering physically and mentally, it’s more important than ever to get everyone excited about their fitness.

To help you find the boost needed to get yourself up and moving we’ve put together a list to help you stay motivated whether you’re at home or – hopefully soon – back at the gym!

For a lot of people, one of the most discouraging aspects of going to the gym is being surrounded by people preforming better than they are. And while it’s easy to get caught up in our own self-doubts and insecurities, it’s important to remember that some people have been working on their fitness for years!

In fact, the odds are that your role models felt the exact same as you back at the start of their fitness journeys! As you form friendships at the gym, you’ll find that everyone is constantly working to help each other reach their goals.  At West End we have nurtured a culture where we champion each other’s successes.

Going to a gym like the West End AC allows you to explore a range of exercises and find what’s right for you! At our gym you’ll not only have access to a range of equipment and classes, but also trained professionals who are eager to show you how to get the best enjoyment out of any workout.

Our gym fosters an encouraging and welcoming atmosphere where we make sure everyone is given the tools for success! But don’t just take it from us. Read for yourself how one of our own club members  found the motivation to stay active, even during a pandemic, with the help of her West End family!

Try writing a short reflection after each workout to keep track of your emotions. That wonderful feeling you get after completing a workout can often be fleeting so it can help write it down as a reminder you of that post-workout endorphin rush every time you read it.

Try recording your thoughts on some sticky notes to leave around your house or keep a note on your phone that you can pull out anytime you need a dose of motivation!

Completed 5 sets of an exercise after intending to do 3? Learned a new punching technique? Made it to only one virtual class in the last week? All of these are reasons to celebrate!

By rewarding yourself at every milestone you prove to yourself that what you’re doing is worth repeating! Giving yourself incentives to keep working out is guaranteed to increase your motivation and consistency!

And don’t forget to get creative with the way you reward yourself. Have a favourite show on Netflix? Promise yourself an episode for every workout you complete! Or how abut consider making yourself that favourite smoothie bowl after each work out.

Setting and crushing goals is one of the best motivators when it comes to fitness, but if you set those goals too big, you’re only going to be disappointment and discouraged. The best tip we can give is to be realistic when setting your fitness goals. Things like fitness level, health conditions, and even how much time you can dedicate are all contributing factors.

One of the best approaches is to start small and slowly while consistently working your way up to longer and more intense workouts. You’ll be surprised at how quickly you see results!

Most people see working out as a chore, so why not change it to be something fun and social?

Team sports are a great way to socialize while working up a sweat or you can rally up a  group of  5 friends to take a Small Group Private class together at West End. Watch how quickly your workout goes by when you’re talking, laughing, and encouraging each other to do better! Having a workout buddy is perfect for keeping each other motivated and accountable for your fitness goals.

For anyone who struggles to find time in their busy schedules to workout, this is also great way to kill two birds with one stone! You can dedicate time for social interaction while you get a healthy dose of physical activity!

Don’t forget the music! While it obviously helps with boredom,  The American Council on Exercise says that listening to music during a workout has several other benefits including improved motor co-ordination and reduced feelings of fatigue! Tempo even has an impact on how you preform so it’s no wonder that runners gravitate to songs with 120 bpm or more!

When you put together a custom playlist dedicated solely to your work out you give yourself another reason to get active while enjoying all your favourite songs!

If you’re still struggling to find the motivation to start your fitness journey, send us an email at and one of our West End AC family members will be glad to help!
